A foot stove, made of metal and wood, allowed the user to carry heat to the corners of rooms or to other rooms and buildings. The door opens to reveal an iron box which held hot coals. The outside walls and the top are perforated in a pattern which allows the heat to escape. Each foot stove is equipped with a handle for easy carrying and many were used both at home and in unheated churches during long Sunday services. This one is marked "SP" on the rim, probably indicating the initials of the owner. The round shape is unusual as foot stoves are commonly square.
