As with other academies, it was customary to hold academic examinations at the end of each quarter at Deerfield Academy. Parents, trustees, and townspeople were invited to hear the students display their learning progress. This invitation is printed on the back of a playing card (Jack of Diamonds). Often a ball followed the serious part of the day, such as this one held at Mr. Cooley's Hall. Oliver Cooley (b. 1772) had a tavern license for a building on Lot 29II on the Deerfield street from 1809 to 1816, a site that was the home of taverns and hotels from 1805 to 1935.
