Summary and Objective
Students examine digital images to understand that baskets were made in the Connecticut River Valley.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
The teacher will hand out the digital image entitled Pocumtuck Basket Makers and Making Baskets. Students will be introduced to the concept that basket making was indeed an industry found in the Connecticut River Valley by having students analyze and critically examine the digital photograph entitled Pocumtuk Basket Makers. The teacher will guide the students to answer the following questions. What do you notice? Where do you think the picture was taken? When do you think the photograph was taken? Who is in the picture? Why?
Step 2.
The teacher will hand out the corresponding text to the students which explains these questions.
Step 3.
The teacher will next hand out the digital pictures of the actual baskets made here in the Connecticut Valley. Students will break up into groups of 3 or 4 to examine the different baskets. The teacher will ask them to answer the questions including: What are these baskets made of? Why do you think they were used? Why did they use these materials? Who made them? When were they made? Why did they make them?
Step 4.
Hand out text that goes along with each picture.
Step 5.
Students will discuss their group findings. Were their predictions correct? Are the baskets similar? Are there differences? If so, what are they?
Step 6.
POSSIBLE EXTENSION ACTIVITIES: Students will go home and find baskets used in their households today. They will bring them in and a similar discussion will ensue. Students could also make small reed baskets with the art teacher.
