Summary and Objective

Students will understand that simple machines have been around for a long time. They will illustrate their understanding by categorizing tools of yesterday, into the six category types of simple machines, lever, inclined plane, screw, pulley, wheel & axle, and wedge.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Students will be introduced to the six simple machines: lever, inclined plane, screw, pulley, wheel & axle, and wedge. Contemporary life examples will be shown and discussed.

Step 2. Download pictures of tools from the digital collection and print them out. View video demonstrations of Early American Tools which are especially helpful since they show the tools in action.(video clips in Activities section of the American Century website.

Step 3. Students will create a class chart of the Six Simple Machines. They will place printed pictures (from the digital library) of the tools in the correct simple machine category.

Step 4. Optional post-activity: Students can make an interactive notebook, listing the six simple machines, drawing and labeling one or more early tools under the given category.

Step 5. Optional post-activity: As a class, read a book about pilgrims or colonial life and identify examples of the six simple machines.
