Summary and Objective

The children will learn about toys from 1850 - 1919. The children will discover the toys of yesterday are still enjoyed today.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Read "The Velveteen Rabbit" by Margery Williams to the children.

Step 2. The children will list old-fashioned toys and their descriptions from "The Velveteen Rabbit".

Step 3. The children will view and read about eight toys on the American Centuries website.

Step 4. The children will choose one of the toys from the website to compare to a modern day version. Extension: The children will find simple machines (wedge, lever, screw, pulley, inclined plane, wheel and axle) in toys of yesterday and today.

Step 5. The children will bring in and share the modern day toy (pictures or actual toy).

Step 6. The children will compare their toy from a different time period by making a Venn diagram (how they are alike and different).

Step 7. The children will present their findings about toys of today and yesterday.

Step 8. The teacher will lead a discussion about toys past and present. The toys may have been less complicated, but they were just as well loved.
