Summary and Objective
Students will understand that the school experience has changed. They will also understand the effects of the school structure and the historical era on a typical school day. Commonalities of the two experiences will also be realized.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
The entire class will share a discussion about their school day. Included in this discussion will be the lay-out map of the students' present school.
Step 2.
The children will be divided into 4 groups. Each group will be given a picture from the digital collection depicting a part of the school experience in the 1800's. The following pictures will be handed out: Reward of Merit to Amos Hamilton, Schoolroom at the Mill and Bars: Recitation Day, On the Way to School, and One Room School in Wapping.
Step 3.
Each group will discuss their picture, make 3 conclusions, and write them down.
Step 4.
The individual groups will report back to the entire group with their findings and conclusions.
Step 5.
With the help of the students, the teacher will create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the two school experiences.
Step 6.
The teacher will read excerpts from"Picturesque Franklin" related to schools and students in the 19th century.(Pgs. 32,33,56,57,&58)
Step 7.
Each student will be assigned to draw a "then and now" picture of one facet of the two schools lesson.
Step 8.
Post- Activities: 1. The students write compare and contrast paragraphs of their pictures. 2.Visit the replica of a one-room schoolhouse in the area. 3. Role-play a school day in the 1800's.
