Summary and Objective
Students will look at pictures of gravestones before taking a walking field trip to their local cemetery. Students will understand that there is a sense of history and time passing that objects such as gravestones help us to appreciate.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Pre activity: Introduce students to the different rocks that are used to create gravestones (see links below for information).
Step 2.
Pre activity: Have students look at the John Williams gravestone and identify what it is. Expose children to books with photographs of different gravestones. Discuss what we notice, e.g., design and size. At the Kindergarten level we are looking for designs, numbers, letters and names that are the same and that are different. We will use time and chronology words and phrases such as now and long ago.
Step 3.
Teacher will have 2 photographs of each the gravestones we will view from the local cemetery. We will match photos to familiarize ourselves with them.
Step 4.
We will talk about respect in public places as in a cemetery.
Step 5.
We will travel to the nearby local graveyard. We will take a count on paper as to how many graves have the American flag near them.
Step 6.
Children will have a scavenger hunt, using the pictures above, to complete in small groups of 4 students with an adult as their guide.
Step 7.
Children will do gravestone rubbings with adult supervision, pending permission from the local cemetery.
Step 8.
We will observe both the old section and new section of the cemetery, if it has both, and discuss our findings.
