Summary and Objective

Students will understand that the way the topics of health and nutrition were approached at the turn of the twentieth century was much different than at the turn of the twenty-first century.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. After students have been divided into small groups, show the bottle and the Japanese Pain Reliever flier, one at a time, giving them time to quietly make notes about what they see - discussion will follow.

Step 2. When you get to the cookbook, you'll need to use the first link below and the drop-down menu to go and look page by page. Again, ask students to make some notes on what strikes them as important, interesting, or strange.

Step 3. Allow the students time in their groups to discuss and list what they learned about the view of health and nutrition at the turn of the Twentieth Century.

Step 4. Now, have them discuss and list - still in their small groups - how this differs from our view of health and nutrition today.

Step 5. Next, each small group is to prepare and present two news reports on health and nutrition awareness (one for each time period) based on what they learned from our items and their discussions.

Step 6. Students who are interested in further exploration of health and nutrition could try the other links presented below.
