Summary and Objective
The students will understand that leisure activities of the late nineteenth century are similar to some leisure activities of today. The students will study photographs of children in the nineteenth century, compare the leisure activities of today with the leisure activities of the past, and write a short essay about their observations.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
The students will study the following photographs of children at play: "Game of Checkers", "Two Children Blowing Soap Bubbles", "Boys with Willow Whistles", and "Little Girl and Doll at 'Tea Party".
Step 2.
The students will complete a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast leisure activities of today with leisure activities shown in the pictures.
Step 3.
Students will answer the following questions based upon the pictures:
1.) Describe the activities in each of the pictures.
2.) Have you ever participated in any of the activities shown? If so, which activity(ies)?
3.) How are the activities shown in the pictures different from the activities you participate in? Be specific!
4.) Notice the clothing that the children are wearing in the pictures. How is it different from the clothing you might wear while playing?
Step 4.
Students will write a short essay discussing the similarities and differences between the leisure activities of today and the leisure activities of the 1ate 1800 and early 1900's. In the essay, the students should include any relevant information from the questions.
