Summary and Objective

After viewing the primary source documents about antislavery in Massachusetts, students will understand that the antislavery movement was active in the state.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Students will view the background information about the Underground Railroad from the PBS website.

Step 2. Students will participate in the interactive activity from the National Geographic website.

Step 3. Students will examine the primary source documents from the digital collection for evidence of the antislavery movement in Massachusetts. They will answer the following questions after examining the documents from the digital collection: 1) Name at least four famous abolitionists who spoke in Massachusetts. 2) List ways Massachusetts residents tried to abolish slavery.

Step 4. Students will make a booklet to demonstate their understanding of the antislavery movement's methods entitled "Antislavery in Massachusetts". The various ways Massachusetts residents were involved must be highlighted within the booklet.
