Summary and Objective

After learning about the lives of two marines, the students will understand and appreciate that personal sacrifice is important in a free society.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Students will look up the word sacrifice in their dictionaries and then brainstorm on what they think sacrifice means.

Step 2. Students will listen to an oral biography of a veteran. (Teachers could use friends, relatives or citizens in their community who are veterans.) For example, in this classroom, students will listen to a World War II U.S. Marine Sergeant, Sergeant Gula, who is this teacher's father.

Step 3. Students will examine any artifacts available. For example, students in this class will try on the Eisenhower Jacket, Marine hat, Dress Blues, etc.

Step 4. Teacher will read a one page biography of Lieutenant Thomas Williams Ashley of Deerfield, MA. Students will read it silently as the teacher reads it out loud.

Step 5. Students will be shown pictures of Lieutenant Ashley, Deerfield Academy, and World War I pictures.

Step 6. Students will be asked to draw and color an illustration that shows how Lieutenant Ashley and the veteran they listened to and learned about, (such as Sergeant Gula in this classroom) personally sacrificed by serving in the military. (They will be laminated and displayed.)

Step 7. As an enrichment activity, the students will be asked to compare and contrast the lives of the veterans.
