Summary and Objective
After completing a timeline using hats from home, students will study hats from colonial to modern times, comparing hat styles from their generation to the other time periods. Students will understand that a timeline is a useful tool, how a timeline is made, and be able to make compare-contrast observations.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Have students bring in different hats from home, (make sure they have information to share about their hat).
Step 2.
Students discuss as a whole, or in groups, the who, what, where, and when of their hats.
Step 3.
Have students work in groups and compare uses and functions of their hats. They will also need to come up with dates for each of their hats.
Step 4.
Students will research pictures of hats from the digital collection and come to conclusions about uses. Have students write down any information they have learned about these hats for sharing in class discussion--especially dates. If they like they can draw a picture of the hat for the timeline.
Step 5.
Place a large sheet of paper on floor/table and create a hat time line with the students hats. This would be a good time to add the tricorn hat if you choose to do that activity.
Step 6.
As a follow up activity, students can create a tricorn hat. Directions can be found on several web sites and vary in difficulty.
