Summary and Objective

After viewing pictures of children from The American Digital collection and reading from the 5 topics in the First Step Nonfiction, Then and Now Series, students will demonstrate their understanding of children’s lives of by creating captioned pictures to display on a bulletin board. The Then and Now books are leveled books with side by side photographs of children then and now.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. The teacher will show and discuss pictures from the digital collection. Then students will break into 5 groups. Each group with have 6 of the same books to look at. Students will rotate so they can have time to read the text and look at the pictures. The 5 topics are school, transportation, home, communication and toys and games.

Step 2. The second lesson will repeat with the students reading and looking at the 5 books. They will select 3 ideas from the books, and write them down.

Step 3. The teacher will select one for each child. The students will take the book, and create a picture depicting children doing an activity then and now. They will also write a caption explaining the picture.

Step 4. Pictures will be displayed on a bulletin board. Students will be allowed to browse and discuss these pictures with each other.

Step 5. Teacher will conclude lesson by collecting information from the students and record their information on a venn diagram to show their understanding of how children's lives have changed.
