Summary and Objective

By reading about the various jobs performed and viewing illustrations, students will understand that young people, in order to become skilled workers, participated in various apprenticeships during the early years of the United States. Students will share their learning through a written description and created simulation of a selected apprentice.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Students will review the job descriptions within "Little Jack of all Trades" for apprentices who learned a trade from craftworkers.

Step 2. As a group, students will compile a list of the trades that were available.

Step 3. Students will each select an apprenticeship for their focus

Step 4. Students will view the selected job on the American Centuries website in "Little Jack of All Trades".

Step 5. Students will write a short paragraph describing their chosen apprenticeship.

Step 6. Students will create a "prop" from poster or cardboard that will help them to explain the job of their apprentice.

Step 7. Students will share their job description as an apprentice and explain how their "prop" was used.
