Summary and Objective

Upper elementary students will use artifacts from the American Centuries website to examine clothing and other apparel worn by people from the past. This will allow the students to understand that people in the past dressed differently than we do today. After examining the apparel from historical eras, students will be asked to reflect on how that clothing would or would not be socially acceptable now, in the present.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Students choose one artifact image to examine. Only one student can examine each artifact from the collection. This way every student can share a different artifact at the end of the activity. The teacher may choose to have students work with a partner or individually.

Step 2. Next, students will examine their artifact. They will be provided with the label containing the artifact information, and asked to think about how it was used.

Step 3. After examining the artifact, students will need to write two paragraphs containing the following information: Would this item be acceptable to use in modern times? Why or why not? How is this item the same as what we wear today? How is the item different than what we use today? Or, why don't we use the item in the modern day?

Step 4. After students have had enough time to complete the writing assignment, reconvene the class.

Step 5. Students will share the image of their artifact on the projector that is connected to the computer, or the teacher can print the images and show them that way.

Step 6. Students can read or talk about their findings. They will also listen to other students as they compare and contrast these garments.
