Summary and Objective

By listening to stories and viewing photos of Grammar Schools in the 1800 and 1900’s students will understand that there are similarities and differences in attending school from then to now. Students will discuss the similarities and differences of a typical school day then and now.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Pre-activity: Teacher will show enlarged pictures of various school houses, children, and horse drawn school buses included in this activity. Students will be asked to think about how schools in the progressive era were different from their school today.

Step 2. Pre-activity: Teacher will read a letter to the class that was written by a student, Amanda, who lived 100 years ago (www.DLTK-kids.com website) and find the similarities and differences to the child writing the letter.

Step 3. Bring back the letter and pictures. As a group chart the similarities and differences from then to now.

Step 4. Have the students write a letter to Amanda, who lived 100 years ago, letting her know how things have changed in 100 years. Students will draw a picture of what their school looks like.

Step 5. Students will share their pictures and letters with the class.

Step 6. Post-activity: Have the student’s brain storm how their life would have been different 100 years ago. Have them explain why they would or would not want to have lived 100 years ago. Would life have been harder or easier for them?
