Summary and Objective

Students will understand that slaves in America had many different stories. Students will read excerpts from authentic slave narratives. They will then study advertisements about slaves for sale and escaped slaves. Choosing one, they will write a first-person narrative filling in the details of this person's life.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Divide students into three groups.

Step 2. Using the website listed below, one group will read about Olauduh Equiano's life in Africa. The second group will read about Olauduh Equiano's journey to America. The other group will read 3 slave narratives from the PBS website: Slavery and the Making of America (the Slave Memories section).

Step 3. Each group will list major events or descriptions of the conditions of life during the part that they read

Step 4. Have the students share their lists with the class in three columns on the board: Life in Africa, The Journey to America, Life in America.

Step 5. Look over the advertisements for runaway slaves and slaves for sale on this activity. Discuss who wrote these ads, who is target audience for the ads and whose story is left out.

Step 6. Then, have students work alone or in pairs to choose one of the advertisements or bills of sale to write a story about.

Step 7. Using their ad and the lists on the board, have students write a first-person narrative about what might have happened to that slave before and after the ad was placed.

Step 8. Have students share their stories with the class.
