Summary and Objective
By examining primary documents, students will understand that there were similarities and differences between slavery and indentured servitude in New England.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Preview vocabulary students will encounter in the primary source material.
Step 2.
Make copies of the documents pertaining to indentured servants and slaves.
Step 3.
Make packets of material with one indentured servant document and two slave documents each for groups of about 5 students.
Step 4.
Each group should be given 2 copies of a Venn Diagram.
Step 5.
Instruct each group to read the three documents and answer the following Questions: How old is the person described in the document? What kind of work will this person do? Name the parties that benefit from this contract.
Step 6.
The documents about indentured servants should be read aloud at this time. Each group will be asked to add the information they have gathered to the Venn diagram about indentured servants.
Step 7.
Repeat step 6 for the documents about slaves.
Step 8.
Engage the class in a discussion about the similarities and differences between slavery and the economic arrangement of indentured servitude, such as provisions for education, food and clothing, and church attendance. Students will take the information gathered through the class discussion to write an final reflection paper.
