Summary and Objective

Students will view photographs and artwork to gather information about the life of local immigrants. They will attempt to identify various ways immigrants were treated by nativists, what jobs immigrants were likely to have and how immigrants would have lived. Students will then put themselves in the place of an immigrant to explore how the immigrant might have felt.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. In pairs, students will view all of the photographs and artwork relating to local immigration.

Step 2. After viewing each item, students will write down how the immigrants were treated, jobs they had and their living conditions.

Step 3. Students will generate a class list of the experiences of immigrants.

Step 4. Students will generate a list of feelings they might have had based on the experiences of the immigrants.

Step 5. On their own, students will write a letter back home putting themselves in the place of an immigrant. They will describe what their life was like including specific examples of the way immigrants were treated, jobs they had and how they lived.
