Summary and Objective

Students will understand that maps can be hand drawn and were done by hand in the past. They will demonstrate their knowledge of the United States by creating their own hand drawn maps of the United States.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Pre-activity: Students will study the regions of the United States throughout the year.

Step 2. Teacher will show the example of the hand drawn map from the American Centuries website and will explain how academies offered cartography for women to study during the 19th century.

Step 3. Students will visit the attached websites to view different types of maps.

Step 4. Students will choose the type of map they want to create (political or physical).

Step 5. Students will use poster paper, markers, and crayons to make their own map of the United States.
