Summary and Objective

Students will understand that the United States was significantly impacted by the influenza pandemic of 1919-1918. By familiarizing themselves with background information and using specific primary source articles, students will learn about the magnitude of the pandemic and the response of the early twentieth century health care providers. After examining the modern health care and prevention techniques recommended by the Center for Disease Control, the students will be asked to evaluate the historic response to the flu pandemic based on modern health care standards.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Visit the United States Department of Health and Human Services website and learn about the great flu Pandemic of 1918-1919. As we will be using primary source documents from Franklin County Massachusetts, and because the flu reentered the U.S. by way of Camp Devens, MA, be sure to read about the impact that the flu had on Massachusetts.

Step 2. Examine the primary source newspaper articles from Franklin County Massachusetts found in this activity.

Step 3. Visit the Center for Disease Control website and learn about the preventative measures and treatments that are recommended in the present-day United States.

Step 4. Compare the health care response to the great flu pandemic in Franklin County in 1919-1918 to the preventative measures and treatments available in the present-day United States.

Step 5. Give the health care response in 1919-1918 a grade of A,B,C,D, or F based upon the modern standards. Use specific examples from the primary sources from Franklin County in 1919-1918 and the Center for Disease Control to explain why you chose that grade.

Step 6. Describe some modern advantages that we have today to combat a flu pandemic that were not available in 1919-1918. Do not limit your discussion to modern medical advantages.
