Summary and Objective
By the time the students tackle this lesson, they should already have a good knowledge base on the causes and effects of the Great Depression. In this lesson, students will look at four different examples of how people during the depression dealt with the hardships caused by unemployment. After the completion of the lesson, students will understand that different strategies were used when dealing with the Great Depression.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Students will briefly review (by class discussion)the causes for and effects of unemployment during the Great Depression.
Step 2.
Teacher will pass out "coping with the Great Depression" chart, consisting of a blank column for each of the four online articles.
Step 3.
Students will analyze all four articles and briefly summarize them on the "coping with the Great Depression" chart.
Step 4.
After analysis and summarization, students will decide which coping method they believe would be the most effective.
Step 5.
Having chosen their most effective method, like students will break into groups (a total of four groups)anddiscuss the specific article.
Step 6.
After discussing the specific article, students will write a letter (pretending that they were a person witnessing the event in the article they chose).
Step 7.
After completion, students from each of the four groups should discuss why they believed their coping method was the most effective.
