Summary and Objective

Students will understand that when packing for their voyage to America, the Pilgrims had to carefully choose what posessions they would need to bring; then each student will prepare a meaningful list and pack their own bag to bring on an imaginary pilgrimage to a new home far away.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Day 1: Using the online collection and assorted documents, students will look at items similar to those the Pilgrims may have brought on their Mayflower voyage and categorize them (ex. food, clothing, tools, books, memories, etc).

Step 2. Each student will then make a list of items they would bring if they were moving to a new home.

Step 3. Each student will bring a pillowcase from home packed with sample items from their list.

Step 4. Day 2: Each student will display their items in the categories they used and explain why they brought each item.

Step 5. Students will describe one item of importance they had to leave behind.

Step 6. The class will create a 3-circle venn diagram showing items the Pilgrims brought, items the students brought and items they share in common.

Step 7. Additional Activity: Photographs can be taken of 3 items from each student's collection to be used in writing a book.

Step 8. Each student will write a book about their pilgrimage using this format: Page 1: Why I am leaving my home and where I am going. Page 2: What I will need on my trip and when I arrive. Page 3: Three things I am bringing and why. Page 4: One thing I must leave behind and why I will miss it. Page 5: My most prized posession that I am bringing. Page 6: My hopes or dreams for my new home and new life.
