"Betty at the Churn"

Summary and Objective

Students will understand that butter comes from cream and that they can make it themselves as was routinely done long ago. They will examine photographs of a butter churn, then make butter by shaking cream in a jar. Students will taste the butter and compare it to modern-day store-bought butter.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Show students photograh of a woman using a butter churn. Ask what they notice and gather ideas of what she is doing. Explain what the object is and what the woman is doing. Show website picture for interior view and explain parts.

Step 2. Gather ideas for how one could make butter without a butter churn. Explain how they will be making butter by shaking cream in a closed jar.

Step 3. Record predictions for how long it will take to see butter.

Step 4. Pour heavy cream into transparent jar and put a lid on. Note the time and begin to shake.

Step 5. When butter has formed students will record the time it took and compare it to their prediction.

Step 6. Taste the butter.

Step 7. If available compare taste and texture of the student made butter to store bought butter. Share opinions.
