Summary and Objective
Students will understand that apprenticeship was an important part of education and training in the colonies. They will answer key questions about why people became apprentices, what kinds of tasks apprentices had to do, and more. Students will complete three diary entries based on what they have learned about apprentices using one of the subjects of the contracts included here.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Use the websites listed below to introduce the basic idea of apprenticeship.
Step 2.
Have students list the kinds of work apprentices did, the kinds of things they learned, and any information they have about what their lives were like.
Step 3.
Have students choose one of the indenture contracts included here. They should use the "Show text" option in order to read them.
Step 4.
They should read through the contract and answer three questions: How long is the term of indenture? What is required of the apprentice? What does the apprentice get in return?
Step 5.
Have students write three 1/2 page-1 page diary entries from the perspective of one the apprentices mentioned in the contracts.
Step 6.
Have students share their diary entries with the class if they would like.
