Summary and Objective
Students will understand that children in the 1800s read and solved word problems. Using the book "The North American Arithmetic, Part First for Young Learners," from the American Centuries website, students will read and solve actual math problems from the 1800s. Students will then create their own problems using items from the American Centuries website in their problems.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
First have the students read and discuss page 20 of the North American Arithmetic book found in the American Centuries website.
Step 2.
Next, students will be given price lists from "Ware Store Day Book [Vol. I]" and "N. Vickary, Taxidermist" from the website. As a class we will choose a few items to include in a word problem and write a sample problem together.
Step 3.
Then, students will be grouped in pairs/threes to write their own word problems with the primary source documents.
Step 4.
Finally, students will exchange word problems and solve the problems created by classmates. Class discussion following this activity should include comparing and contrasting items and prices of the given time period with today's items and prices, as well as comparing and contrasting ninteenth century word problems with samples of MCAS problems of today.
