Summary and Objective

Students will understand that American involvment in the Vietnam War caused much controversy and emotional debate among its people. The students will view two different political cartoons and explain each one's point of view about the Vietnam War.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Prior to this lesson, students will have read the book, Charlie Pippin, and have listed important facts brought out in the book on the Vietnam War.

Step 2. In addition, the students will have completed a character/trait chart, which highlights the characters with different points of view on the Vietnam War.

Step 3. The teacher will share information about political cartoons and their ability to visually show one's point of view on a topic.

Step 4. Students will view both "Count Your Blessings" cartoon and the cartoon used in Robert Romer's oral history. They will write a paragraph on each explaining the cartoonist's point of view and how it is demonstrated visually.
