Summary and Objective

Students will understand that soldiers faced many challenges on a daily basis fighting trench warfare during WWI. Students will examine various pictures of soldiers' outfits and letters from soldiers themselves describing their experiences. Students will also understand that some of the same challenges soldiers faced during WWI are the same that soldiers face today.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Prior to this lesson students completed a trench warfare game. (web link below)This is an option for the prospective user-teacher. Students will begin the lesson with a 5 minute open response. Students will write brief summary about the most difficult time in their life. Then rate the difficulty of the situation on a scale of 1 being the easiest to 10 being the hardest. Students,if they choose, may share their responses with the class.

Step 2. Students will be read a letter written by a soldier describing his experience in the trenches. Students will discuss as a class the challenges the soldier mentions of trench warfare.

Step 3. Students will be shown various pictures from the online collection as well as pictures from another web site(link below)of soldiers in trenches.

Step 4. Students will hear a presentation by the teacher that goes with the pictures of the challenges soldiers faced in trench warfare including the new types of weapons used during WWI.(use web link below to get teacher notes)

Step 5. By the end of the lecture students will be able to have a clear understanding of why trench warfare was so difficult. Students will also have an understanding of why generations of people were killed with the new types of weapons introduced during the war such as poison gas.

Step 6. Students will be asked to review their situation they wrote about in the beginning of the lesson. They will rate their situation in comparison to the challenges soldiers faced in trench warfare.

Step 7. Students will finish the lesson with a class discussion on similar challenges they feel soldiers face today.
