Summary and Objective

Students will understand that propaganda has been used through history as a means of influence and deception. Through the use of propaganda sources from WWII and the Cold War era students will recognize that propaganda is an ongoing technique used by nations and individuals and determine its historical relevance.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Students have been taught the WWII era at this point and have been shown examples in the past of propaganda from this era.

Step 2. Students will be given a printout of the Primary Source: "Turners Falls Post Plans Alien, Propaganda Check," This will be read this over together as a class.

Step 3. Students will be given the Excerpt from "Speech on Communists in the U.S. State Department Made Before the Women's Republican Club in Wheeling, West Virginia, February 1950". Read this together as a class.

Step 4. Class discussion on the two Primary Sources of propaganda from the two eras. Focus will be on the legitimate fear of each era, as well as the affect of propaganda on drumming up unrealistic fear.

Step 5. Students will look over examples of Cold War cartoons (see link)and why these examples played a part in society during the Cold War. The goal is to show that propaganda can come from a variety of sources.

Step 6. The closing activity in class will focus on modern day examples that we brainstorm as a class on current propaganda methods.
