Summary and Objective

Students will understand that the Revolutionary War was started because of the events leading up to and shortly after the conflicts at Lexington and Concord. They will learn the goals of the war and the far reaching impact fighting for independence had on other nations. This lesson will take two class periods. During the first, background information regarding the events at Lexington and Concord will be shared from primary sources. During the second period, a modern research guide will be read to the students. Students will compare both sources, learn the reasons that the event took place, and will learn the ramifications that this event had regarding our relationship with the British.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Other resources used in this lesson: Magic Tree House Research Guide, "American Revolution", by Mary Pope Osborne and Natalie Pope Boyce (to be read aloud); "The Battles of Lexington & Concord", by Lucia Raatma; "The Road to Freedom, 1750-1783", by Stuart Kallen; "A Historical Album of Massachusetts", by Monique Avakian; "The American Revolution, 'Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death!" by Deborah Kent; and "It Happened in Massachusetts", by Larry B. Pletcher

Step 2. The students will be given background information regarding the historical event that happened in Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. Copies of "Bloody Butchery" will be handed out so that the students can listen / read the event as described from E. Russell's Salem Gazette on April 21, 25, and May 5. Discussion will take place during / after this reading as to why this event happened, the loss of life, and the effect of this event on the people of the province (including the funeral elegy). The musket, bullet pouch and soapstone bullet mold will be viewed and discussed.

Step 3. The following day, the Magic Tree House Research Guide, "American Revolution" will be read aloud by the teacher to the class. This book gives a great description of the American Revolution's events before and after the conflict at Concord, MA. The students will discuss the time line included in the book that includes information of events that led up to and shortly after Lexington and Concord.

Step 4. The similarities and differences between the primary source of information, "The Bloody Butchery" and the Magic Tree House guide will be made inito a chart by the entire class. The class will sumarize the lesson by answering the question, "Why has this event been called 'The Shot Heard Round the World'"?
