Summary and Objective
This activity is part of a larger project on the history of Montague, Massachusetts. Students will investigate the PVMA online collection of pictures and accompanying text to better understand the historic perspective of the ongoing Spiritualism movement at the Lake Pleasant section of Montague. Students will answer the following questions after viewing the materials: What do spiritualists believe? What "radical" ideas did the founders of the Lake Pleasant spiritualist movement promote? When did the spiritualist movement at Lake Pleasant begin? Why do you think the spiritualists chose Lake Pleasant? When was the "heyday" of Lake Pleasant spiritualism? What kinds of events could visitors attend at Lake Pleasant?

Step 1.
Visit the website http://www.americancenturies.mass.edu and find the site "Spiritualism at Lake Pleasant, Montague, Massachusetts."
Step 2.
Study the pictures and their descriptions and make notes on anything of importance.
Step 3.
Using this information, answer the questions above. [When students complete this activity, the questions will appear on a worksheet.]
