Summary and Objective

The goals of this activity are for students to examine a variety of clay objects, discuss their possible uses, and then find out if their guesses were correct based on the information about the objects. Students will understand that clay has been an important material in people's lives over many centuries.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Before the activity: You may want to print the pictures (in color if possible) from the PVMA American Centuries Web site to be used with this activity.

Step 2. If possible, bring in some unshaped clay. Ask students to guess what it is. Ask them to think about the different things that could be made with it.

Step 3. Have students look at each picture from the PVMA American Centuries Web site. Ask them to say what they think the object is. Ask them to think about how old it might be and who might have used it.

Step 4. For each object, read the information about it on the related label.
