Summary and Objective

Students will look at pictures of the past and relate the pictures to their own life experiences. They will then choose one picture to modify by inserting their own head-shot into the scene. The goal is to make this activity a hands-on learning experience and to help young students understand that there is a connection between themselves and the lives of children in the past.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Take a head-shot photograph of each child. Print each digital collection item at left. Photocopy all images to the proper size for inserting the head-shot into the picture.

Step 2. Show each digital collection item to the children. For each item, elicit ideas and impressions from the children; then share information about each item using its label.

Step 3. Have the children choose one of the pictures from the digital collection. The students will insert their head-shot and color the picture.

Step 4. Students can write their own text for the picture or they can dictate their text to the teacher.
