Summary and Objective
By identifying functions of old tools and classifying them as types of simple machines, students will understand that technology in earlier ages helped extend our ability to do work.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Students will review the simple machines (lever, pulley, wheel and axle, screw, inclined plane).
Step 2.
Students will view items from digital collection and classify each as a type of simple machine.
Step 3.
Students will view Video Demonstrations of Early American Tools (video clips in Activities section of the American Centuries web site--click on the bicycle icon at left or the link below).
Step 4.
Students will create a detailed sketch of a tool from digital collection or other sources (books, local hisorical society field trips) and conduct research on the Internet and in print.
Step 5.
Students create a poster with drawing and information about their antique simple machine.
Step 6.
Optional post-activity: Hand tools from home may be brought in to further illustrate and to provide a hands-on element.
