Summary and Objective
Students will understand that moccasins were made, worn, and sold to tourists by Native Americans. They will carefully observe and describe moccasins, noting the individual features of the moccasins, the materials used, and the decorative patterns created.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Show students how to access the pictures of the moccasins on the website and how to use the zoom feature to view the details. Give them time to explore the selected moccasin pictures.
Step 2.
Focusing on each picture, one at a time, ask students to describe the moccasins. Use the following guiding questions, as necessary:
What do the moccasins look like? What do you notice about them? What tribe made them and where did that tribe live? When were they made? Why were they made? What materials were used to make them? How might they have actually created them? What was the process? How are they decorated? How are they like the others? How are they different? Encourage students to include DETAILS when they describe the moccasins.
Step 3.
Optional Follow Up Activity: Have students draw a picture of Native American moccasins with colored pencils, if available, and write a short description of them. They might draw a pair they just observed or they might use the links below to find another pair.
