Biographical Information
Susanna (Haswell) Rowson

Born in Portsmouth, England
1786- published her first novel, Victoria
1791- published a novel, Charlotte, a Tale of Truth, which became widely popular
1795- wrote plays and acted in the theater with her husband, wrote the play "The
Volunteers"
1796- wrote the play "Americans in England", both this play & "The Volunteers" were filled with rabid Americanism
1797- opened a school for girls in Boston and ran it until 1822, she continued to write as well as instruct young ladies in subjects that included the art of fine needlework
1798- published a novel, Reuben and Rachel
1804- published Miscellaneous Poems


Susanna Rowson was known as a novelist, an actress, and an educator.
