Popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, memorials like this one were at first created with needle and thread, often as an exercise by school girls. In the 19th century, printed examples were available and could be tailored to individuals by inserting names and date, and often verses. This example depicts a woman in 19th century dress and hair style weeping at a tomb that is inscribed to the memory of Hariet A. Cooley who died September 25 aged 4 years. The verse included is: "O grave where is thy victory, Ask him who rose again for me."
