Eliza Allen Starr created this Yellow Trout Lily in 1860, one of several botanical watercolors she painted during this period. As the American middle class grew and leisure time increased, women had more time for avocations. For Eliza, however, painting was not just a hobby. Beginning in the late 1850s, Eliza wrote books, mostly with religious themes tied to her newly found Catholic beliefs. She also illustrated them.
