James Avery of Buckland, Massachusetts, toured his record-breaking oxen around the United States. His oxen, of unsurpassed size and strength, were major draws in their heyday. Here, Avery's oxen went to New York City's Harlem River Park. In 1896, Harlem was mainly populated by immigrants, many of them German-speaking; of them, a significant minority were Jewish. In later years, Harlem would again draw a new group of immigrants, although this new group, African-Americans, would come from the southern United States.
