Skimmers were used to lift solid food from the broth in the cooking pot, as well as to skim fat from soups and stews. Some skimmers were made of iron or tinned sheet iron, but the most desirable ones were made of copper or brass. This brass example (brass is an alloy of tin and copper) was made in two parts, the pierced skimmer and the long handle fixed with three rivets. The end of the handle is cast into a flattened shape and terminates with a hook for hanging near the fireplace.
