This photograph of a 19th century house and barn on Main Street in South Deerfield was taken between 1895 and 1902. The gable end on this house, which faces the street, is trimmed with gingerbread, an architectural addition typical of the late Victorian period. The exterior of the house is composed of vertical boards painted white and each window is fitted with shutters with movable louvres. The unpainted barn at the back has a similar profile to the house and its gable window matches the house's attic window. The Howes Brothers of Ashfield, Massachusetts, took the picture and, typically, they posed a man, probably the owner, in the foreground.
