This gouge belonged to Captain Caleb Clapp (1752-1812) of Greenfield, Massachusetts. A gouge is a woodworking tool that is a chisel with a curved blade. It is used to cut round grooves or holes in wood. Clapp was a soldier in the American Revolution and a well-known merchant in Greenfield.
