This button mold, which makes a single button. belonged to Deacon Phineas Field of Charlemont, Massachusetts. The button mold has a metal half that has the design for the top of the button incised into it. Metal plates incised "P F" are attached to blocks of wood to form the other half of the mold which forms the button's shank. To make a button the mold would be attached together and molten pewter would be poured through the hole. The upside-down button second from the left is how the button looks directly from the mold. The button on the left has had the excess pewter removed from the shank and shows the backwards "P F" mark from the mold. The other buttons show the decorated face.
