The selections included from this book are primarily of buildings lining the well-preserved Royalston, Massachusetts, town green. The accompanying narrative focuses on famous owners and provides historic anecdotes, while at times, omitting equally relevant information. For instance, a section focuses on the Bullock mansion, but it fails to mention that it was the home of Alexander Bullock, a former governor of the state. One reason the buildings on the green are so well preserved is that Calvin Bullock, who was raised in town and made his fortune in New York City, New York, returned to summer in the country as was fashionable early in the twentieth century. He owned and cared for three houses on the green.
