During World War II (WWII), our country was mobilized for the war effort. Those on the home front were constantly reminded to "make do." Doing without, or finding alternatives to many "necessities," was one way in which people displayed their patriotism. A sack, such as this sugar sack, or a flour, meal or other type of feed sack, took on a new life for many families. Often a special day was set aside in the week or month to wash, bleach, and stitch used sacks into new dresses, pillowcases, quilt backings, and other necessities of life.
