This selection from the Westfield Normal School catalogue of 1860 reprints the constitution of the "Lyceum and Library Association." There is also a reproduction of a portion the library's catalogue. Lyceums were organized in the 19th century to promote popular education. They were venues for public lectures, generally by popular speakers of the day, and often contained libraries. The library at Westfield was created in 1858 by a student, Sherman Adams, and was initially administered by students. The catalogue lists books by topic but the numbers suggest that they were not organized this way on the shelves.
