Greenfield's common stands at the heart of a bustling city. New England town commons have always served as the center for political, social, commercial and religious life. Town founders designed them as "common" areas, to be used by residents as they see fit. Sometimes hay was grown, cattle were grazed, and goods were weighed in this undeveloped space. This view is from the west side of the common looking toward the intersection of Main and Federal Streets. The large building is the Mansion House, which had retail space on the first floor and rooms on the upper floors. Trolleys are carrying passengers up and down Main Street in this early 20th century view.
