The power dam on the Connecticut River at Hadley Falls was built in 1848 was a timber crib dam. The wooden dam was replaced by a granite faced concrete one in 1900. The dam is more than 1,000 feet across. Holyoke is nick-named The Paper City. At one time, there were 25 mills producing paper in the city. Holyoke was planned as an industrial city and this dam provided the power to many large mills.
