William Roland White opened this hotel around 1882. The building still sits on the corner of Chester's Main and Riverfront Streets. The river referred to is the West Branch of the Westfield River, which flows through Chester Village. This village became the center of industry and population in Chester, and by 1870 the town offices were moved to this western section of the town from the original center which is about three and a half miles to the northeast.
