Plainfield, Massachusetts, is located in the northwest corner of Hampshire County. First settled in 1770, Plainfield was incorporated as a district in 1785 and as a town in 1807. The town was a bustling center of lamb and leather production, but like so many other towns in Western Massachusetts, the advent of better transportation, and opportunities out west caused a decline in the population during the last quarter of the 19th century. West Mountain, which is 2125 feet above sea level, is the highest point in Hampshire County. The headwaters of both the Westfield and Deerfield rivers are also in Plainfield.
